How To: Basic Three-Thread Flatlock Stitch / Hem on Brother 1034D Serger

April 5, 2018 by Jennifer Moore Leave a Comment

Adding the Brother 1034D Serger (http://amzn.to/1FNpsxo) to the sewing machine arsenal has been one of my most useful purchases. Showing how to do a basic three-thread flatlock stitch / hem – a technique in which the unbalance of the stitch is used to create the stitch you want.

BROTHER SERGER TECHNIQUES:
https://goo.gl/pHzGbz

SETTINGS:
Left Needle 1.0 (wide) or
Right needle 1.0 (narrow
Upper Looper 4.5
Lower Looper 7.0-8.0
Differential: 0
Knife 3.0-4.0
Thread: Standard sewing
Stitch Finger ON
Fabric: Any
Stitch Length 3.0-4.0
Foot: All Purpose

Flatlock can be used to join two fabrics or serged on a fold.
We can use the stitch loop side or ladder side as the top.
When stitching on a fold, or anytime you don’t want to cut the edge, use the guide foot to guide your fabric and protect the edge.
To achieve a flatlock stitch, needle thread tension is loosened and lower looper thread is tightened.
Lower looper will pull needle thread across the back of the fabric
Note the reverse side of the stitch, the thread needle forms V’s.
Lower looper should be almost a straight line at fabric edge.
