One Simple Technique = Countless Easy Sewing Projects | BEGINNER FRIENDLY

Perfect sewing project for beginners! This is a simple and easy technique that I learned early on in my sewing journey and continue to use over and over again.

Take two pieces of fabric, place them right sides together, then sew around the perimeter leaving a gap of at least 6 inches.

If it has corners – trim them off with scissors without cutting into the stitch lines.

Pull fabric through the opening and turn sewing project right side out – poking the corners gently with a chopstick.

Using an iron, press flat – making sure to turn the raw edges in at the opening.

Top stitch around the perimeter around 1/8 inch from the outside edge, optionally you can add more lines of top stitching further in like 1/4 inch and 1 inch.

Using this one technique – you make make everything from blankets, placemats, napkins, burp cloths, coasters, pillows (by adding stuffing or pillow form in between layers and ladder stitching closed), and much more. I even used this basic concept to make reusable snack bags with plastic snaps.

By switching up your choice of fabrics, interfacing, and batting – this is such a versatile technique.

I used quilting cotton on one side and canvas on the other for a set of placemats, and by adding a layer of batting to the outside – you’ve got a blanket or coaster.
