12 Quick Tips for Sewing Better Face Masks

March 28, 2020 by Jennifer Moore Leave a Comment

Sharing 12 quick tips for sewing better face masks – both the surgical and closer fitting styles.

After prepping, cutting, and sewing face masks for local health / medical organizations, I’ve found a few ways to improve the durability and make the sewing / construction process easier.

Typically, hospital and healthcare workers are not permitted to wear homemade / sewn personal protective equipment (PPE). That being said, updated CDC guidance does advise healthcare professionals to use “homemade masks” as a “last resort.”
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.html
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/12/6/05-1468_article

“In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.“

Please note that homemade masks are NOT considered PPE and won’t protect you from contracting disease or illness. (More from the CDC)
