‘My Grandma Sewed, But I Could Never Learn How’ | NOT TRUE!

July 4, 2019 by Jennifer Moore Leave a Comment

Hi guys! This video is more of a sewing chat, sharing some thoughts I’ve had recently about the typical response I get when I tell someone I sew. “My grandma (or insert other female relative here) sewed beautifully, but I could never learn how.”

It’s such a defeatist attitude and I wish more people would realize that yes, they can get into sewing.

When their grandmother started out, they were at the same level with zero knowledge or skill. Those things are obtained by education, experience, help, and time. How can you become something without doing?

What can we as a sewing community to make this more approachable to beginners and bust this crazy myth that they can’t learn to sew?

That’s a large part of the reason why I started the Sewing Report, because I found such joy and fulfillment from sewing and was not someone who would naturally gravitate toward this activity. For me, sewing immediately opened up my eyes creatively and sparked a deeper sense of purpose.

It’s not just sewing that I’m seeing this excuse, but in other areas – which I feel is kind of a cop out. At this moment in time, you can literally learn just about anything you want online for free. We have every advantage at our fingertips!
