VLOG: Sewing Face Masks | Exchanging Fabric at a Gas Station??

April 11, 2020 by Jennifer Moore Leave a Comment

Long week of sewing face masks to donate to healthcare workers and meeting a new friend at the Circle K gas station to exchange fabric and jewelry – just a normal week here at Sewing Report headquarters.

Vlogging my experience and showing the process of sewing over 30 masks, plus demonstrating the construction of 2 different mask styles.

Patterns I’m following:
*Note that the Cricut curved mask took me a lot longer to sew compared to the surgical style, which was a quicker project*

Hospitals Accepting Face Masks from Sewing Community https://www.sewingreport.com/2020/03/hospitals-accepting-face-masks-from-sewing-community-updated-list/

Typically, hospital and healthcare workers are not permitted to wear homemade / sewn personal protective equipment (PPE). That being said, updated CDC guidance does advise healthcare professionals to use “homemade masks” as a “last resort.”
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/face-masks.html
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/12/6/05-1468_article

“In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.“

Please note that homemade masks are NOT considered PPE and won’t protect you from contracting disease or illness. (More from the CDC)
