MAKING MY OWN CLOTHES | Handmade Wardrobe Project | NO CLOTHES SHOPPING | LIVE SHOW

August 6, 2017 by Jennifer Moore Leave a Comment

At the beginning of the year, I announced that I was going to make my own clothes as part of a journey to sew a handmade wardrobe.

So how’s that all going?
Can women truly make their own clothes instead of shopping at the mall or online from fast fashion companies?

The goal was to not buy any new clothing – anything new had to be made / sewn.

I’m fine with wearing RTW clothes I already own, since at this point it’s a “sunk cost.”

Since starting this project, I’ve made tops, dresses, leggings, lounge wear, and even UNDERWEAR. I’d still like to try and attempt a swimsuit, some warmer clothing like pants and fall/winter dresses/suiting.

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT THAT STARTED IT ALL:

With less than 5 months left, I can safely say I should be able to get through that time period without any issues. Besides clothing, I have not even bought any shoes or accessories.

My RTW bras are still in decent shape (I know, I haven’t made a bra yet!), and I rarely wear socks – so those have not worn out.

If you’re considering embarking on your own journey to streamline your closet and avoid fast fashion, it’s entirely possible. Being apart of the slow fashion movement feels incredibly meaningful, and it’s fun to sew your own clothes.

Another thing I’ve learned is that I really DON’T need as much stuff as I previously thought I did.

That’s where I post fabric, sewing patterns, and other goodies. That will also be the place where I may occasionally try to sell sewn items and other miscellaneous things as part of that social experiment I was talking about toward the end of a previous live show.
